Faith in Education

A young man sits at a desk with books open in front of him. He is smiling off to his right, and several classmates sit behind him in desks of their own.

What kind of relationship should there be between schools and faith communities? Can they come together to empower students while still protecting the boundaries set by the First Amendment?

Wheatley Fellow Bryant Jensen sits down with co-author Irvin Scott from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the hosts of the Faith Angle podcast to discuss the two men's research report, "Faith in Educational Renewal: Religion as a Resource to Transform Learning Opportunities". Jensen and Scott argue for a "third way" that allows schools and faith communities to form valuable partnerships to support student educational outcomes while avoiding the extremes of both secular and sectarian approaches. The two researcheres suggest that this pluralistic and non-proselytizing approach could be of particular benefit to underprivileged communities.
