At Bethesda's Waters - Celebrating 20 Years of Carl Bloch's Masterpiece at BYU

This year, the BYU Museum of Art celebrates 20 years of the acquisition of the Carl Bloch painting, Christ Healing the Sick at Bethesda. In 2001, The Wheatley Institute’s founders, Jack and Mary Lois Wheatley brought this painting, the first of many Carl Bloch paintings, to the BYU Museum of Art.

In a video created by the BYU MOA, Robert Wheatley, Museum of Art donor and the son of Jack and Mary Lois Wheatley, tells the story of the unveiling of the painting in the museum. At the time, Mary Lois Wheatley had been recovering from a stroke. As the painting was uncovered, the image of Christ healing at the waters of Bethesda resonated with Mary Lois. She was reminded of Christ’s healing power and felt seen in her own moment of healing.

The Wheatley family and Museum of Art hope that all who come to see the Carl Bloch exhibit can witness the Majesty and Humility of the Savior, Jesus Christ.
