The Jack & Mary Lois Wheatley Leadership Scholarship is a three-year program intended to support two years of undergraduate study at Brigham Young University, followed by one year of graduate study at a graduate institution of the student scholars’ choice. In addition, recipients may be considered for part-time employment as Research Assistants for the Wheatley Institution.
Wheatley Scholars do not apply for the scholarship or ask faculty to recommend them. Rather, Wheatley Scholars are chosen by faculty who notice that the individual meets the criteria for and exemplifies the qualities of the scholarship. The scholarship is offered to juniors who have earned a minimum of 60 credit hours, excluding AP and IB exam credit, with at least 30 credit hours earned at BYU by the end of the previous fall semester. Qualified candidates are selected on the basis of:
- Minimum 3.50 cumulative and BYU GPA
- Character and integrity
- Scholarly potential, including desire to pursue an academic career
- Leadership abilities
- Faculty recommendations
