Learning to Love in the Dust of His Footsteps

Distinguished Fellow Shima Baradaran Baughman Delivers Ensign College Devotional

Shima Baughman smiles at the camera, dressed in a black dress shirt and a white vest, with plants and nice wood paneling walls behind her.

"In ancient Jewish tradition, the most devoted disciples were said to follow so closely behind their rabbi that they were covered in the dust kicked up by his footsteps," Shima Baughman said. "Could we learn to love like the Savior through proximity—by trying on Christlike ways we see in others until they slowly become our own?"

Baughman, Woodruff J. Deem Professor of Law and a Distinguished Fellow at Wheatley Institute, focused her March 10th devotional remarks at Ensign College on discipleship, love, and relationships. Sharing stories from her own life and the lives of others, she examined:

  • Learning discipleship through proximity
  • Viewing love for Christ as a skill that can be developed, not just a feeling that comes and goes
  • The opportunity to learn about Christ and His love through other people
  • Christ's ability to heal and comfort

Baughman's full remarks can be found here.
