Troy Closson, reporter for The New York Times, explored the difficult dating scene facing Gen Z in New York City— and used Wheatley research to investigate.
"Ask any relationship expert and they’ll tell you: Young people are in a romance recession," Closson writes. "They’re dating far less than their parents and grandparents did back in their 20s and early 30s, according to poll after poll, inspiring all kinds of theories and concerns. But for a generation beginning their adult lives, one simple dilemma is ever more apparent: It’s hard to hit the dating scene amid a crushing economy, sluggish job market and escalating costs."
Closson cited "The Dating Recession", a February research report by Wheatley Institute and the Institute for Family Studies, to underscore his point. The report found that not having enough money is cited by half of today's young adults as their biggest barrier to dating. One of the report's authors, Wheatley Fellow Brian Willoughby, was asked to comment and noted that it is sometimes difficult for older generations to understand the new dating landscape faced by today's young adults.
