Professor Gates earned a BA in Philosophy at BYU, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Villanova University. Specializing in ethics/moral philosophy, he has taught philosophy at BYU for the past 15 years, and recently began teaching business ethics in the Marriott School. He has a chapter in the Routledge Companion to Business Ethics on teaching ethics (forthcoming this year), and is currently writing several papers on the topic of moral rationalization and self-deception. He is also a visiting fellow with the Wheatley Institution (working on their ethics initiative). He resides in Provo with his wife and eight children.
